Project

Lucas is thrilled to announce their appointment for the prestigious decorations contract at the new Museum of London.

Working with construction manager Sir Robert McAlpine directly for the client, London Museum in Smithfield, we will focus on the comprehensive refurbishment and rejuvenation of the iconic Smithfield General Market.

Our team will deliver meticulous work to existing historic elements, such as structural steelwork, phoenix columns, skylights and high-level timber sarkin boards, beams, and roof domes.

The careful removal and encapsulation of lead paint will be carried out to existing steelwork, with a specific emphasis on cast iron pedestals and column bases. Additionally, specialist sustainable sealer coats will be applied throughout the basement, addressing crucial areas like brickwork domed soffits, historic vaults, and tunnels.

The scope also extends to the comprehensive decorations in new event and retail spaces, as well as the historic Cocoa rooms.

Our 56 week programme of work is due to commence this spring.

The new Museum of London will sit at the heart of one of the capital’s most historic and creative quarters, forming an integral part of the Smithfield area next to Farringdon. Stanton Williams and Asif Khan are the architects along with conservation architect Julian Harrap.
