While our team continues to make progress on the prestigious Stonecutter Court redevelopment, Lucas is proud to announce the completion of a pro-bono refurbishment project at Dr. Johnson's House, a historic landmark located just 400 meters away.
Dr. Johnson's House, a Grade I Listed building, was the 18th-century home of Samuel Johnson, a celebrated English writer and lexicographer. Often referred to as the "House of Words," this location holds immense significance as the place where Johnson compiled his seminal Dictionary of the English Language in 1755. This work is recognized as a cornerstone in the development of the English language.
In collaboration with volunteers from Mace, our team undertook a comprehensive refurbishment project. This focussed around a meticulous redecoration of the top-floor Garret – the very room where Johnson is believed to have penned his dictionary. Careful attention was paid to historical detail, ensuring the finished space evokes the atmosphere of the 18th century.
The timing of this project couldn't be more fitting, as the small, independent charity that runs Dr. Johnson's House prepares to launch a new exhibition this month. The centrepiece of this exhibit will be the much-anticipated return of a desk said to be the one Johnson used while writing the dictionary.
This pro-bono project exemplifies Lucas' commitment to giving back to the communities in which we work. We are honoured to have played a role in preserving this significant piece of literary history.
