Lucas becomes full member of RoSPA

Lucas is proud to have become a full member of RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. RoSPA is the only UK charity that works across occupational health and safety, and road, home, leisure and education safety. Sadly, more than 14,000 people are killed in accidents across the UK each year with thousands more suffering injuries, many of which are life-changing.

Lucas has been invited to take part in AkzoNobel’s forthcoming Collaborative Sustainability Challenge. We are the one company chosen to represent all painting companies worldwide in their “value chain”. The Challenge is an AkzoNobel initiative designed to brainstorm issues experienced throughout the company’s entire value chain; that is companies from raw material producers, through manufacturing and distribution, up to painting companies like Lucas and paint customers along with relevant influencers.

Painting teams from Lucas are to be deployed at One Nine Elms, a development of two landmark tall towers linked together by a glazed bridge. City Tower will be a 56 storey residential tall building whilst the 42 storey River Tower will incorporate a 173 room luxury hotel from the ground up to the 18th floor.

A Lucas decorations team is returning to the former BBC Television Centre in West London, this time working throughout a new 9-storey plus basement commercial building currently under construction. We will undertake a full painting programme to the core of the building, all office spaces, staircases and back of house areas.

Lucas rated 70 out of 75 in a comprehensive audit of its labour practices carried out by the specialist supply chain appraisals organisation, Achilles, on behalf of one of our major clients, Sir Robert McAlpine. The audit was undertaken in December and January and covered areas such as recruitment, modern slavery and the right to work, wages and benefits, business integrity and ethics, bullying and harassment, occupational health, and working hours.

Our care about our appearance on site, respect for the local community, protection of the environment, attention to site safety and care for our workforce received 4½ stars out of 5.

Lucas has won an important basement and core painting package at The Whiteley, the famous former Bayswater department store now undergoing a £1 bn restoration and redevelopment. The façade and grand entrance of the Grade II listed building are being restored, and the full Foster + Partners-designed complex will contain 139 apartments and townhouses, 20 new shops and restaurants in a central courtyard, a cinema, a large-scale gym, and a Six Senses hotel and spa - the first in Britain - with 110 rooms and a social wellness club.

Lucas has secured another important painting package in the City of London. We have sent in our painting teams to 40 Leadenhall Street, a complex new office building with multiple amenity spaces, also known as “Gotham City” and situated in the heart of the insurance district. Its northern core rises in steps to a height of 34 storeys, whilst the southern core also rises in steps up to 14 storeys. Architects Make say their design is reminiscent of the skyscrapers of early 20th century North America, and takes account of the cluster of striking tall buildings nearby.
