On cloud nine
Lucas has completed a complex and delicate painting project on a new road bridge being constructed in East London, part of the transport network for the Olympic Park. The new Angel Lane bridge for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians connects The Stratford Centre with the Olympic Park. The Olympic Delivery Authority instigated a design competition for students at London's Royal College of Art for a mural to be painted along one side of the bridge. The winning design is an intricate pattern of white clouds against a blue sky and Lucas was commissioned to develop an accurate method of painting that would do justice to the design. Our team created a laser-cut stencil system of almost 30,000 sequenced squares to give a pixilated visual impression of the design. We carefully trialed different paints to ensure a successful result on the concrete surface and sealed the work with an anti-graffiti coating. We completed the painting in mid-August and the bridge has just been re-opened.
