S Lucas wins prestigious decoration package for the rebuilt Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Specialist painting contractor S Lucas has won the prestigious decoration package for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which is being rebuilt in Stratford-upon-Avon. The contract is being managed by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s construction manager, Mace. The world-famous riverside theatre designed by Elisabeth Scott and built in 1932 has been closed since 2007 for a major rebuilding programme. It is due to open again in 2010 when it will house a new 1,000 seat thrust stage auditorium, the largest of its kind in the world. The S Lucas team will bring in specialist access equipment for painting steelwork and timbers in the roof structures for the new theatre and the adjacent Swan Theatre. The team will also be responsible for applying suitable finishes for the heritage windows in the original Scott façade and decorating numerous backroom facilities in the theatre complex. The decoration programme has now started and is expected to finish in good time for the scheduled 2010 project completion.
